APHRODITE
Who Finds Their Way to Aphrodite?
People drawn to Aphrodite often understand that beauty is not frivolous.
They notice texture, scent, colour, touch, music, food and the strange power of making something beautiful simply because beauty itself matters.
They can be passionate people. Creative people. People who love deeply and sometimes disastrously. People learning to enjoy their own bodies, their own desires and their own lives without asking quite so much permission.
Aphrodite is certainly love. But she is also attraction, pleasure, sensuality, confidence, longing and the extraordinary force that draws one thing toward another.
And importantly, she is not simply about being desired.
Born From the Sea
Aphrodite arrives beautifully.
In one of her oldest and most famous stories, she rises from the sea itself.
Foam becomes goddess. The ocean gives way, and desire walks ashore.
Aphrodite is often reduced to the goddess of romance, but she is far larger than that.
She is the pull between people. The sudden ache of wanting. The pleasure of beauty. The confidence of inhabiting yourself fully. The force that makes us reach toward another person, another experience, another possibility.
Her myths are filled with beauty, passion, jealousy, pleasure and consequences. Aphrodite reminds us that desire is powerful precisely because it can change what people do.
It gave birth to desire.
The Power of Desire
Aphrodite would probably consider that part of its charm.
Desire makes people move.
Something calls to us, and suddenly standing still is no longer enough.
The Language of Aphrodite
Beauty
Beauty can stop us in our tracks. Aphrodite reminds us that something does not have to be practical to have enormous power.
The Sea
Restless, sensual and impossible to completely control. The sea carries Aphrodite's oldest story within its foam.
Roses
Fragrance, softness, beauty and thorns. Few flowers capture the complicated territory of love quite so perfectly.
Shells
Treasures carried from the sea. Shells have become enduring symbols of Aphrodite's sea-born beauty and sensuality.
Desire
Desire tells us that something matters. It does not always tell us whether pursuing it is wise. That part remains our responsibility.
Pleasure
Good food. Warm skin. Fragrance. Music. Laughter. Beautiful surroundings. Aphrodite reminds us that pleasure belongs to a life fully lived.
The Things That Gather Around Her
Flowers & Plants
Myrtle was particularly sacred to Aphrodite, while roses and fruit became woven through her stories and later traditions of love, beauty and fertility.
Creatures
Birds of beauty and courtship frequently gather around Aphrodite, while dolphins carry the memory of her deep connection with the sea.
Treasures
Beautiful objects belong easily in Aphrodite's world. Not because beauty is shallow, but because taking pleasure in beauty can itself become an act of attention.
Leaving Something for Aphrodite
Pleasure itself can become devotional.
Roses or myrtle. Honey. Sweet fruit. Wine. Incense. Perfume. Shells. Beautiful jewellery or a candle chosen simply because its scent makes you happy.
Wear something that makes you feel magnificent. Cook a beautiful meal. Swim in the sea. Buy yourself flowers. Dance. Make art. Tell someone you love them. Let yourself enjoy something without first needing to earn it.
When Aphrodite Finds You
When You Have Forgotten Pleasure
When life has become a list of things that must be done and you cannot remember the last thing you did simply because you loved doing it.
When You Want to Feel Beautiful
Not beautiful according to somebody else's measurements. Beautiful because you have begun inhabiting yourself without apology.
When Love Gets Complicated
Love is rarely tidy. Aphrodite's stories certainly are not. She can be approached when desire, jealousy, attraction and affection have become difficult to separate.
When You Want Something Again
Perhaps the most powerful thing desire does is remind us that we are still capable of reaching toward life.
Aphrodite is not only about being desired.
Sometimes she arrives when it is time to desire your own life again.
Not decorations around the edges of life: some of the very things that make us want to live it.
